For the 3.1 phillip lim Fall 2008 Collection, Phillip Lim contemplated an unusual pairing: what would happen if you combined David Bowie's stoic elegance as his character in the film Man Who Fell from the Earth with the freeform eccentricity of Stevie Nicks during her magical tenure with Fleetwood Mac? The result: a mood that is eccentric, brooding, mysterious, and elegant. Textures and fabrics unite to inconspicuously manipulate the masculine and feminine: crisp poplin, washed velvet, rich cashmere, lace, and laundered wool are mixed with standard issue denim, distressed leather, and cotton canvas. Bags are slouchy but structured, in rich colors with understated geometric details. Flounce-sleeve maxi-dresses and embroidered kimono gowns are contradicted with high-waist pencil skirts, aviator blazers, and carrot pants for a vibe that conceals and reveals, all the while refusing to forget that when getting dressed, there is always fun to be had.
